To clarify:

I was essentially asking (though I did not quite know it at the
time) how to create the declarative equivalent of a
procedural-style incrementing "counter variable" to count template
matches.

Thank you all for your replies and info about
declarative/functional programing, recursive templates, counter()
function, etc., it has been very helpful.
