You have it inside-out. Do this instead:

<xsl:variable name="rowstyle">
  <xsl:choose>
    <xsl:when test="position() mod 2 = 0">
        myItems1
    </xsl:when>
    <xsl:otherwise>
        myItems2
    </xsl:otherwise>
  </xsl:choose>
</xsl:variable>
