how to pass vbscript variable as a param using <xsl:param> to XSL file ???

Is this the right way???
i have the following code in my asp code that call the XML and XSL file and
display them:
<%path="c:\mydir\"%>
<xsl:param name = "path" select = "<%=path%>" />

and, i have the following in my XSL file:
<xsl:value-of select="item[$path]"/>

can somebody please help me to use <xsl:param> correctly. Thank you.
