you can't do this in XSL without an extension function as output
characters have to be XML characters in the input.

xt had a non standard output method to allow this, as i recall,
otherwise just output some fixed string like 
[[I want character x00 here]]
and post process the result with perl (or sed or emacs or anything)
to change that string to a null byte.
