Subject: xsl:if test... Doesn't like the "[" when namespace is changed <From Newbie>

I cannot transform this:
<xsl:if test=".[FieldNumber='26']">
This *did* work with the namespace: http://www.w3.org/TR/WD-xsl",
But since I changed to "http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform" I get an error
(in cooktop) stating that:
Expected token 'eof' found '['.
.-->[<--FieldNumber='26']
Can anyone shed some this?
