Alternatively, you could set a variable to the requisite number of
spaces, and then use that value:

<xsl:value-of select="?"/> is to verbose for my application.
I thinnk i get the indentatioin inthe output file using a
few more entities:

<!ENTITY i1 "<xsl:text>   </xsl:text>">
<!ENTITY i2 "<xsl:text>      </xsl:text>">
<!ENTITY i3 "<xsl:text>         </xsl:text>">
<!ENTITY i4 "<xsl:text>            </xsl:text>">
