yes, although usually people want to do this to get "inherited" values,
in which case,it wants to be:
ancestor-or-self::*[@attr][1]/@attr
or
(ancestor-or-self::*/@attr)[last()]
which coincidentally is exactly the same length (for this attribute
name).
