I suppose you should upgrade to Xalan 1.1
At home (Xalan 1.1 / Linux) I had no problems.
Here at work (still Xalan 1.0.1 / Solaris) I can reproduce this error.
Perhaps there's another workaround - unfortunately I don't know how
to interpret the above error message ...
