Subject: Confused with ranges of variables...

I'm trying to do a range check with a variable. The problem is that the variable is of the from 123-456789. If I do a = 123-456789 it does not return anything despite the fact that such a value exists. I presume this problem is due to the variable type. I want to do a numeric comparason on this but have no idea how.
