You should also check out Cocoon from the Apache Group
http://xml.apache.org/, specifically the XSP Processor
http://xml.apache.org/cocoon/xsp.html. It performs a function similar to
that which Jens Lautenbacher described without the need for a complete
Java/C++ framework/application.

it _can_ be cumbersome... but still I would be interested more in what
