Variables are discussed in the XSLT Recommendation, section 11.
...which I found out fairly easily by looking at the <plug>handy-dandy XSLT
and XPath Quick Reference</plug> guide available for you to print (it's in
PDF) at http://www.mulberrytech.com/quickref.
