Man, do I feel stupid. Somehow the arguments in the invocation of XT
got switched in my makefile: my test document was being interpreted as
a stylesheet. I still don't understand why the top element got
stripped off though :-)
hum... I am not too happy about the dubious convenience of section 2.3
