I tried this but the problem now is that it gives an error. I don't
believe IE supports "text()".

I believe the problem is that IE doesn't implement the built-in rule for
text. Just add:
<xsl:template match="text()">
<xsl:value-of select="."/>
</xsl:template>
to your stylesheet.
