I shouldn't have implied that the formatting aspects aren't important.
That is my background -- One of my projects was a composition and
pagination engine for Matthew Bender's home-grown markup language
back in the days before they even heard of SGML.
I just figured that there must be some more fundamental dependencies,
and was fishing for clues as to what they might be.
