Now someone may say so was XML but XML was at least capable of all those things even though it may not have been an optimal fit for some of them.

I think with most technologies/standards we tend to see
(a) an era of experimentation, where lots of people invent new things
(b) followed by an era of consolidation, where a small number of winners emerge
That is not what is happening here. Rather than letting the technology evolve to allow convergence on the "winner" best suited to a particular domain JSON is being propagandized and force-fed to all and sundry for all and everything.
