I don't agree that, XSD hexBinary type doesn't have much meaning.

XML data when confirming to xs:hexBinary type, can represent any binary data (for e.g an image). i.e xs:hexBinary's value space is the whole of binary information. And it's lexical space, is hexadecimal encoding of each octet of binary data.
