We had Yet Another Alternative Syntax for XML presented at XML Prague, under the name SML. I fear that all such efforts are doomed to failure. The benefits of the alternative syntax over XML, however much better it is, aren't great enough to justify the cost of being different. It's like improving on the QWERTY keyboard.

Except that there is a better available alternative to QWERTY called Dvorkak - I've used it for more than 15 years.

(And I'm not one of those with an emotional attachment to the current syntax)

It seems obvious that the most important thing about XML is that it was the first.

People did a lot of that with XML just because there was no other alternative.

So it might be time to look into alternatives, like Mark (https://mark.js.org). :-)

XML in the larger markup context.

Right now there's also a discussion going on at

so come join in if you feel like it.
