Agreed, Peter, but then Michael's assertion would amount to "XML is designed to represent XML data". The point is whether or not statements about the "purpose" of XML can really be upheld. Unless the purpose is broadened to: tree-structured information.

Technically, yes, for some value of the word "document".
In the Real World™ it's a data file that uses XML syntax.
