Another way to say this that I use, saying essentially the same thing,
is that JSON tends to win when the programmer is in control of the
format and XML tends to win when the author of the document (or data)
is in control.

But note also that when JSON is edited as text by people who are not
sufficiently careful or detail-oriented, errors can be harder to detect
and/or correct than with XML.
