I agree with all these functions.

But another major function of schemas (small ’s’) is to communicate
TO OTHERS the XML components (syntactically at least and, yes, 
some semantics implied if the schema documentation is included).
The function of telling folks what will be in your documents
(even leaving all semantic implications aside) may well be the
major purpose of a schema. Validation can be done quite nicely
outside any grammar.
