Yes, such kind of project needs a sponsor like AWS or Azure and could
be used to showcase what each of these cloud-infrastructures is
capable of achieving.

Or maybe something similar from Google (I am not familiar with their
cloud products)

We could probably learn from the Internet Archive project.
