You may be aiming at something slightly different, but personally for data stores these days I like Casandra for tabular type data and Neo4J or Titan for relationships. The latter two are graph databases (with various reasons for picking one over the other). Horizontal scalability, only as much schema as you need to make sure things are well defined and maximum flexibility to change things... If I have to play in the document world Elastic Search and / or Solr are high on my list, though depending on the business requirements there are a lot of other good choices.
