Your stylesheet is taking in an input ... I suggest:

<xsl:template name="start">

... so that it has no input. I hope this helps.

p.s. I'm unsure about your question regarding an XML document ... it is a data file, it isn't a program ... when parsed the parsed result is abstract and would need to be serialized ... which process would be doing the serialization?
