Nope. 1. Binary is still faster and for some n of secure, a little more secure. We can say all we want about machines getting faster, optimizations and so on but a binary with an explicit format is faster and easier. The application makes a difference (say one-time-render vs real-time dynamic interaction). 2. The reason to use a format is not simply its reapplication but its application. PDF is a good case. The rendering of XML into PDF is still a large part of pubs, web or otherwise. The PDF display engines and annotation engines do a good job for redlining in review processes and the files serve as a record (say auditing). 3. Text (as in the case of a rendered document in final fixed form) is not always the optimum form. The computer sciency reasons are not always the compelling reasons for a choice of tools or forms.
