This is a good observation, and on that topic, another takeaway for me (which probably reinforces my existing opinions) is that the development of markup standards and systems should not be about an architect imposing a top-down decree on how things should be. Instead, it is about setting up an environment which allows people to work together more effectively. To be honest I found Simon's paper a little long winded for my own tastes, but it was definitely interesting and thought provoking and I would like to thank him for sharing.
