More seriously though I think we are fundamentals in agreement just focusing on extremes.
Lots of use cases for XML. CAN be done very easily. But there other use cases where it is really really hard. And little of it has to with XML proper.
Knowing when you can get away with simple is not always obvious ... That is my main point.
If you have an expert tell you "just use this simple tool you'll be fine". That is great. That time.
But when your in he shark infested waters it can be frightening, or worse you don't notice the sharks.
