The history of XML has been about formats that increase the longevity of information. Sometimes this aligns with programmer convenience, but far more often it's in direct opposition to programmer convenience.
It took marketing to make it about customer needs. The embedded context is in those text nodes that we mostly ignore. Anyone, programmer or not, who ignores text nodes in XML has created multiple universes of problems for himself. I'd be surprised if that describes anyone on this list, even those on the other end of this big/little-endian debate than I am.
