Technically, XPath 2.0 is a subset of XQuery 1.0, which has an XML syntax known as XQueryX, so there is nothing that prevents using an XML syntax for XPath, at least in theory. More generally, the XML syntax can express ASTs in a natural way since the underlying data model can be seen as a tree too.

I guess non-XML syntax is used at these locations for other reasons/motivations than technical limitations (simplicity? readability?).

Does it make sense?
