The white space issue

@prefix db: <http://docbook.org/ns/docbook>.
@prefix : <http://example.org/dummy> .

{  authors: [
       {name: "Michael Kay", affiliation: "Saxonica"},
       {name: "Liam Quin", affiliation: "W3C"}
    ]
    abstract: <para { style : "bold" }>Here be some dragons</para>
    content: _________
              <db:section { numbers : [1,1,2] }>___
      	         <db:title>Section title</db:title> ___
	         <db:para><db:emphasis
{role:"bold"}>Bold</db:emphasis>__ <db:emphasis {role:italic}>and
italic</db:emphasis></db:para> <db:para>He is <age>101^^integer</age>
	      </db:section>
   meta: [
     {dob: 1991-11-23T12:01Z ^^dateTime}
     {age: 23^^integer}
     {nick: Mike@en-UK}
   ]
}

How are each of the ws areas (___) to be treated?
What can be learned from XML 1.0?
Particularly between the docbook bold and italic?

Simple rule perhaps?
Lose all 'parser' white space, e.g. between </gi> <gi>
Retain all whitespace a user 'writes'
<gi>__ text__ </gi><gi>
