as Ken said, the grammar for patters is more restricted, in general you 
need to pull the | to the top level or push it into a predicate so

div1[not(@role)]  |  div2[not(@role)]

or

*[self::div1 or self::div2][not(@role)]

or

*[matches(name(),'^div[0-9]+')][not(@role)]

or something
