------->  David Carlisle

so you could just serialize document nodesas <x:document>....</x:document>
and reconstruct the XDM by taking the content of teh x;document element
(discarding the namespace bound to x) and making that the content of a
document node. this is a little more than just an xml parser, but
trivial bit of xquery for example.

I had debauted this then tossed it as I wanted the degenerate case of a
"normal" document to not have the artificial wrapper.
But since then I've found other subtle cases where that's not possible
anyway so I think you suggestion may in fact be the cleanest way to go.

It may even be possible to "stream" this parsing using StAX or SAX with a
filter that removes the outer document element node without having to pull
in the entire document.

Thanks !
