I like Bill's approach--identify the set of abstractions and their operators.

Now that we’ve learned the subject:

   •textual (non-binary) data formats;
   •open standard data formats;
   •data longevity;
   •data reuse;
   •separation of presentation from content.

It's time to dig in and understand it.
