I believe there are now various attempts at creating browser APIs that are
consistent across-browser. These aren't the result of standards commitee
work, just programming by a few brave souls whose work has been adopted
widely. I'm talking about script.ac.ulo.us, prototype, jquery, etc. I don't
think there is completely rigorous consistency across-browser, but they do
take care of abstracting away many of the most glaring differences. And I
think it's interesting that the flavor of this work is very much in line
with that advocated on this group: open-source, bottom-up, DIY stuff, not
regulated in any way by browser manufacturers.
