Could this go any way, perhaps, to solving
the subset problem mentioned in previous
thread?

Here I asked about ways to instruct processors
to regard an instance as one modeled as a subset
of a schema such that the instance should be valid
both by the schema and by some definition of the
subset (which could be Schematron or a list of
XPaths, say).
