There are a number of similar notations, for example a similar notation is
used in XSLT: the specification of the notation is fairly informal.

Why on earth not? (Unless you want to do a patent search, of course...)

Václav Trojan has developed a language and tool called Xdefinition which
formalizes and extends this approach, and which deserves to be much better
known. He has described it in conference papers at XML Prague. Further
