The DTD external subset can declare its encoding using a text declaration in the same way as any other external entity.

It ooes not inherit the encoding of the document entity.

Perhaps the reason you don't see text declarations used very often on a DTD is that the vast majority of DTDs are pure ASCII.

Hello,

An XML document has its encoding specified in the prolog. But what is the encoding of the dtd file ?
When I look at dtd found on internet (for example docbook dtds), I can never find the encoding specified in the document itself.

Does the DTD file 'inherits' its encoding from the enclosing xml document ?
