Its called data conversion--- be it from current or legacy systems.

Once upon a time that was the intent of SGML (Oops XML), precisely so that
"crucial data" can survive their systems--- unfortunately not all "XML" is
set to the task (being little more than XMLified versions of the very
systems that SGML was intended to avoid).
