There are certainly some XQuery implementations that work with (or as) servlets. I don't know enough about what you're trying to do to be certain what would be best for you. I can only suggest that you consider using XQuery. Certainly on my own personal Web site, the Search interface at http://www.fromoldbooks.org/Search/ was built with XQuery, and took only a couple of hours to have something good enough to try out on the production server, and less than a day to have fairly robust production code.
