But in case of Java, I would say, String (in java.lang package) is
very much part of the Java language.

JDK documentation says following about java.lang package - Provides
classes that are fundamental to the design of the Java programming
language.

For performance reasons, we could use StringBuffer & StringBuilder
(introduced in JDK 1.5) classes.
