If the rules only require simple logic (no back-tracking, complex chaining, etc), and if you are just wanting to identify documents with certain patterns, then Schematron is the simplest thing to use. Proprietary rules language tend to use higher-order logics or have domain-specific capabilities; they need advanced features to justify a price. Schematron just uses XPath. Cheers Rick Jelliffe
