I looked at Apache Jackrabbit about a year ago - a content repository
with XML import support and XPath  - and it appeared to be able to
version each node if you wanted to; I changed jobs before I got to use
it in anger.

You also can make a document's text a property of a leaf node, if you
just wanted to store the text.
