Is that a fair perspective?
It aligns with Pete's comment (UK, BAe). 

Given a choice I'll take relax-ng
Given a project choice (no one got fired for buying IBM view) it'll be
XSD?

I had a choice. Looked at XSD and backed off.
Looked at Relax-ng and thought even I can hack it. It's beautifully
simple.
And scalable? Eric's book took me to the corners I needed.

Validation? I think DTD|relax-ng for simple|typed, Schematron/XSLT for
'it matters' or
it's complicated.
