Perhaps, but in the same sense BLOB, CLOB, or object storage in a 
relational storage is a hack.

The most difficult part of the marriage is that a single query language 
is no longer used. Instead, you've got XQuery embedded in SQL and SQL 
embedded in XQuery, as well as the various functions defined in the 
SQL/XML spec. On the other hand, this isn't really much different from 
full-text queries embedded in SQL.
