But is it likewise naive to think these edge cases justify the insanity of
implementation?

If I had a nickel for every time I read someone making assumptions about
metadata inferences from dates and/or timestamps...   Yeesh folks, if you
want period-related or geo meta then PUT IT THE HELL IN THERE and stop
tormenting the rest of us.
