There exists a query language for XML documents linked with XLink links:
http://modis.ispras.ru/Lizorkin/xpathlink.html
http://modis.ispras.ru/Lizorkin/use-cases.html

It is based on a simple extension of XPath and enables quite powerful
functionality for querying (multiple) XML documents linked with XLink links.
