1) Namespaces (who *needs* them?)
2) DTD's (should be broken out of the core)
3) External Entities (not really necessary)
...

Hmmm. It strikes me that most of my complaint vis-a-vis XML are not so 
much with *XML* as the things built around or on top of it.
