I think Derek is right, but again, I'm interested in 
the strength of the consensus of the developers 
regardless of what they build.  It is much easier 
to identify an XML tool builder than an XML user, 
and I do think the strong complaints are from the 
former.  

For documentation, Derek cites (in his order 
significant or not):

1. Allowed characters
2. Whitespace
3. Namespaces

True. A lot of the complaints at the XML DevCon Mike Champion references
are more from XML tool builders than from XML users. For example, I
haven't really seen any users complain about DTDs especially when
compared to the number of gripes I see weekly from Derek's top 3 list at
http://nothing-more.blogspot.com/2004/10/where-xml-goes-astray.html
