The XML Information set describes a set of definitions about the
information in an XML document. It describes different kinds of
information items found after processing the syntax of an XML document, and
their properties. It does not describe any syntax at all, only a set of terms.

Canonical XML describes a practice of syntax usage so as to ensure that two
applications make the same choices (from many available choices) in XML
syntax serialization. It prescribes a syntax for XML documents. When two
instances are in their canonical form, they can be compared with simple
"diff" tools, or they can have digital signatures made from their content
and then compared.

I hope this helps.
