Agreed! Compression costs CPU, sending big messages bandwidth
so as we say in Yorkshire "you can't get owt for nowt"*. 

Also optimisation is invariably more of an empirical rather than 
theoretical science, you have to first find and then widen the 
bottle neck, and for every system the bottle neck is in a 
different place.
