I was trying to clarify the argument that the Atom people appear to be making, not argue on their behalf. I do think that one can defend what they're doing as the conventional wisdom about XML best practice, but I'm not a firm believer in that conventional wisdom myself. The serious business people you mention are using RSS in the "user pull" sense that Len brought up, as a simple syndication / site summary format. Nobody disputes that RSS works well in practice for that, loosely specified though it may be. But are those folks pushing the envelope toward using it for their core businesses? That's where the reality of the situation will reveal itself, and where any problems scaling the RSS loose/simple/consensual approach will be seen.
